Scrooges and Angels Lists
|
 |
 |
The South Carolina Secretary of State's Scrooges and Angels list is the
Secretary of State's annual listing of those charities that represent the best
and worst of charitable giving. Originally, the Secretary of State listed just
the Scrooges - those registered charities that keep their received donations,
giving little or none to their listed charitable cause. Soon, the Secretary of
State's office decided to also recognize the many good charities that gave
almost all of their received donations to their charitable cause. These are the
Angels, those who exemplify charitable work. Now, both Scrooges and Angels are
published. |
The purpose of the lists is to encourage "good giving." In other
words, when those who want to give are educated about where their money goes,
they will make better and more informed decisions when they do give. The lists
are also intended to represent the industry as a whole: national, regional and
local charities are chosen as well as charities representing a wide range of
charitable causes. The lists are not complete: there are many good - and bad -
charities. The Secretary of State's office urges all potential donors to check
out a charity before they give. For complete listing of this year's
