However, I feel the need to voice my opinion. Even though I am confident it will fail on deaf ears. I am appalled at the handling of the issue with the confederate flag by the State of South Carolina. While what happened in Charleston was a great tragedy, it had NOTHING to do with the confederate flag. If the accused shooter had not been posted with a picture of the flag, it would not have even been brought up. The shooting took place because of hatred that the young man had in his heart. It did not represent the society in SC. The young man chose to enter the church with a gun and fire upon innocent people. The flag did not make him do it. If people would educate themselves on the true meaning of the flag, it would not be an issue. I am originally from the north and have resided in SC for the last 12 years. Even being from the north, I know what the true meaning of the flag is. We were taught about history to include slavery, the KKK and racism. Nowhere in that lesson was the mention of the confederate flag used to represent those things. Yes, the KKK may have "adopted" that flag as theirs. But that was not the original intention of the flag. I am sad that because of the shooting by a hateful person, SC has decided to take away a part of history. I feel that this should have been voted on by the people of SC, not just the government. It shows me that the SC government has no regard for the voice or opinions of the people of its great state. I will always remember this as a tragedy for SC not as a victory. I had been proud to call SC my home, but not anymore.
