My father's ancestors fought for the Union in the Civil War; in fact, one was a brigadier general whose claim to fame was leading a retreat at Antietam. My mother's antecedents included Confederate soldiers; after the war, their families were despoiled by Northern carpetbaggers. This national tragedy was settled in Wilbur McClain's farmhouse with General Lee's surrender to General Grant. That was 150 years ago, and it's time we got over it. Lee's honorable surrender should be reflected in decorous actions today. Let's put the Confederate flag where it belongs--in museums and closets. While we revere the courage and conviction of our CSA heroes, it's time for the flag to come down. I heartily commend and encourage your powerful leadership in South Carolina, whose hospitality and historical riches my family and I have enjoyed. My emphatic thanks to you for taking this courageous position.
