Up until Saturday she was among the working poor, earning too much to qualify for Medicaid and earning not enough to enter the marketplace for health insurance. Now she has no paycheck at all. She is unable to sit unassisted, cannot stand, and cannot walk. Her speech is slurred and slow. She cannot think well enough to handle any details of her finances nor healthcare plans. Do you know what I have been told as I try to find medical insurance and any assistance for her? I am told YOU, Governor Haley, and our state congress, decided people like my friend Mickie do not need expanded Medicaid coverage. The Affordable Care Act could have helped her, but you said no. You have no idea of the hell I have been through for days, trying to assist her partner who himself is disabled from a stroke, and to assist her young daughter. There are no resources anywhere. Presently we are begging the hospital for charity assistance to pay for her hospital stay. No rehabilitation center will let her in because she has no insurance. She lays in the hospital bed, hoping someone is able to help her somehow. You and the SC congress have left her with nothing. I cannot invent insurance and resources out of thin air. If I had in my hands the power to expand Medicaid coverage in SC, I would have done it and shouted from the rooftops for the working poor to come and sign up. The power is in YOUR hands -- why do you throw it away???? For the love of humanity, end this human suffering and expand Medicaid as President Obama has given you the ability to do! I beg you to call me and tell me you are doing so immediately. End this unnecessary suffering and enable my friend Mickie to access resources. -- Patricia 843-478-8868
