CHARLESTON, S.C. - Workers have raised the
sailing ship Adventure, which sank earlier this week at Charles
Towne Landing.
The Adventure is a reproduction 17th century trading vessel at
the park that sank at its mooring on Old Towne Creek on Monday.
Charles Towne Landing staff, state park workers and workers from
Davidson Diving, Inc. and Halsey Cannon Boat Yard, raised the ship
Thursday. An attempt had been made to raise the ship on Wednesday
that failed because of high tide.
The crew used gas powered pumps to siphon water out of the
vessel, said Larry Duncan, district manager for the Parks,
Recreation and Tourism Department.
The Adventure also sank in 1999 after planks were damaged by
worms.
Water was drained from the ship and silt was being cleared out
late Thursday afternoon. Work was to continue Friday, Duncan
said.
The 53-foot wooden Adventure was built in 1970 and was part of
the state's Tri-centennial celebration at Charles Towne Landing.
