I am writing on behalf of my mother. My mother, Bobbie Durham, suffered a stroke in December and has been at NHC in Anderson since January in their rehab unit. Her time is ending there and we are faced with having to move her elsewhere. Unfortunately, my parents are not independently wealthy and my mother is now on Medicaid. There are no medicaid beds available at the NHC in Anderson and we are forced to move my mother to a bed at the NHC in Laurens. While we feel fortunate to have secured a bed there, it breaks my heart for her to be so far away from her family, church, and friends. I have placed her on the waiting list on nursing facilities in the Anderson area, but basically I have been told not to expect a bed to become available in the near future. I am not sure how our state is treating the Medicaid programs and nursing home beds, but I am heartbroken that my 83 year old mother will perhaps pass on away from her family. I now find myself asking for intervention and/or help on securing my mother a medicaid bed closer to her family and loved ones. Please help me bring my mother closer to us. She is somewhat lucid and I fear moving her so far away from us will devastate what life she has left to live. If there is anything you can do to help me, I would appreciate it.
