Published Friday, February 6th, 2004

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The State Law Enforcement Division has charged two former prison guards with assault in an incident at Kershaw Correctional Institution in 2001.

James Douglas Robinson, 55, of Casset and Herbert Tyrone Champagne Jr., 31, of Mayesville were charged Thursday with aggravated assault. They are accused of ramming an unidentified prisoner headfirst into steel doors, according to arrest warrants.

The warrants also say witnesses said the prisoner, who the officers suspected of planning an escape, did not resist.

SLED spokeswoman Kathryn Richardson said she was uncertain when the officers stopped working for the state Corrections Department. SLED began its investigation in April 2002, she said. The incident happened in December 2001.
