In Berkeley and Charleston Counties challenger Chip
Campsen defeated Senator John Kuhn. Campsen is a former
aide to Governor Mark Sanford and also a former House
member. In unofficial results with 100 percent of
precincts reporting, Campsen won District 43 with 57
percent to Kuhn's 43 percent.
Longtime Lexington Representative Larry Koon lost to
Nikki Haley in District 87. Haley says Koon didn't do
enough to reach out to voters. Koon says he was busy
working at the State House and noted that the
legislative session ended just days before the June 8th
primary. Unofficial results show Haley defeated Koon
with 55 percent of the vote to Koon's 45 percent.
Also losing was incumbent Senator Bill Branton of
Summerville's District 38. He lost to Dorchester County
Council Chairman Randy Scott, who garnered 67 percent of
the vote compared with Branton's 33 percent.
Haley and Scott do not have opponents in November,
but Campsen faces Democrat Constance Anastopoulo.
Those losses Tuesday follow losses by two incumbents
in June 8th primary election races. Observers say it
reflects a mix of hard-charging challengers,
redistricting and anti-incumbent sentiment.
House Majority Leader Rick Quinn, who has served for
14 years and was the second-ranking member, lost his
seat 51percent to 49 percent to political newcomer
Nathan Ballentine on Tuesday.
Pickens Representative Teddy Trotter lost his
District Four seat to Republican challenger Dave
Hiott.
Other incumbents had to weather very tight races in
their primaries. Republican Senator John
Hawkins was declared the winner in the District 12
Republican primary by 31 votes over challenger Lee
Bright.
And, the state Democratic Party has asked Governor
Mark Sanford to order a new election in a state Senate
race for the seat now held by Senator Maggie Glover of
Florence after charges voting fraud. She will face
challengers Tim Norwood and Kent Williams.
