FLORENCE, S.C. - Just six votes separated two
candidates battling for a state Senate seat in the Pee Dee, but
Florence businessman Tim Norwood pulled out the narrow victory and
faces incumbent Democratic Sen. Maggie Glover in a runoff June
22.
The votes in the Democratic primary in Senate District 30 were
certified Thursday by county election commissions. Glover ended up
with 6,207 votes, Norwood had 5,748 and Kent Williams tallied
5,742.
The candidates had to await certification because Tuesday's count
showed only seven votes separating Norwood and Williams. With
several ballot challenges, no one was sure who had second place.
The closeness of the race was a little nerve-racking, Norwood
said.
"It has been a tight race, and Kent and his campaign did a great
job," Norwood said.
Williams would not comment on the certification. Glover did not
return telephone calls from the (Florence) Morning News.
