COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina trooper has been charged with misconduct in office after authorities say he agreed to erase a drunk driving charge from a Horry County man's record in exchange for money.

Redding C. Smith of Conway was arrested Tuesday in Horry County by State Law Enforcement Division agents.

Smith also has been charged with criminal conspiracy, obstruction of justice and soliciting anything of value for the performance of his duties.

Smith had an arrangement with liquor store owner, Ronald Stalvey, Jr., to have drunk driving tickets dismissed for people who paid them, SLED agents said.

The arrangement was discovered after a Horry County man told SLED agents that Stalvey told him his record could be cleared of a drunk driving charge for $1800. The man told investigators he spoke with Smith while in Stalvey's liquor store.

Stalvey agreed to tape conversations in which the trooper gave Stalvey a story to tell investigators, agents said. Stalvey has not been charged in the case. The investigation is ongoing, agents said.
