Dear Govenor Haley,

 I'm a Yankee but I think I made a small donation to your campaign, so maybe you'll pardon me for meddling in SC's business. 

Have you traveled up North much, Govenor?  We have our monuments to our dead and the flags too. Like yours, they're heart breaking.  The Civil War was as cruel as it gets. Good brave men on both sides, fought and suffered and died.  Eventually the right cause prevailed but at a terrible cost. We might wish that Barney the Dinosaur came down from heaven and suddenly we were all friends, but he didn't.  The monuments and battle flags--yours and ours--remind us of that. 

It might be the easy way out to pull down the Rebel battle flag and toss it in the corner of some museum. But it won't stop there. It won't stop until it has been erased from the national memory that there was ever such a thing as the Confederacy. It's about doing to your state's history what the Taliban did to the Buddha statues and what ISIS is doing to the ancient sites now. 

True, it won't be destruction by dynamite but by oblivion. Remove the memorials and flags, put them away in a museum somewhere. Meanwhile, as always, out of sight, out of mind. Your state is being stampeded into a mass lobotomy operation.

If that happens, you dishonor your dead. And you dishonor our dead. 

And remember Orwell:  "He who controls the past controls the future." Don't surrender the control. You haven't the right to. Nobody has, however loudly they yell that they have. 

Please think this through.
