COLUMBIA -- Former Spartanburg County
Council Chairwoman Karen Floyd has been nominated to fill the 4th Congressional
District's seat on the state Department of Natural Resources board.Floyd would
fill the seat being vacated by former Wofford College president Joab Lesesne.
She has been nominated to complete the rest of Lesesne's current term, which
expires July 1, and for a full term that expires in 2008. The state Senate must
approve the nomination.Lesesne said he submitted his resignation more than a
year ago, but was asked to stay on until a new board chairman was found.Floyd,
the CEO of the Palladian Group and a former Chief Magistrate of Spartanburg
County, said she was honored by the nomination."I hope to provide a balanced
perspective with a business approach toward the conservation, management and
utilization, and protection of our state's resources," Floyd said.Gov. Mark
Sanford said having Floyd on the board would be beneficial because she
understands that government should run like a business."She's got a perspective
that we honestly need to have shouted form the rooftops in Columbia, and I think
Karen's ideally suited for that role," Sanford said."Her extensive background
and skill set will serve our state government well. I'm glad to have Karen on
our team and look forward to working with her."Lesesne said he also thinks his
replacement will be a good fit."She has a good handle on government and
understands the situation in Columbia," Lesesne said. "And she's interested in
the out-of-doors."Robert W. Dalton can be reached at 562-7274 or
