I have been a paralegal in the Charleston area for over 16 years and I have a BA in Criminal Justice. My monthly source of income is my VA Disability and Child Support. I am a Veteran and up until November 7, 2016, we were staying at a homeless shelter in downtown Charleston, One80 place. I found out on November 7th that construction on the Family Center of One80 place would begin that Monday morning. They were going to be removing walls, cutting out doors, and performing various aspects of demolition. to expand the Family Center. We never had a meeting with One80 place about the construction and, first and foremost, that we would be living in this environment. Besides all of the abuse we endured during our stay, the construction deeply concerned me about my daughter's health. My daughter and I were forced to leave the shelter due to the living conditions of the Family Center/Veteran dormitory. I picked up Lily from school on the day construction began and went back to the Veteran dormitory. We walked in and our entrance to the Veteran side of the Family Center was blocked off. The new entrance was a big hole in the wall with no door. Everything in the dorm (bedding, floor, clothes, etc.) was covered in a dust like film. There was exposed insulation where the hole in the wall was located. The air inside our dormitory made my eyes burn and throat itch. Lily started to suffer from the same side effects. She was coughing and I was getting a headache. I had to pack our belongings and leave. I shoved it all in the car and grabbed Lily. I was so worried about Lily and her health. Once we left the shelter Lily's symptoms subsided. She was still coughing, but she said her eyes weren't burning anymore. I provided a letter from my daughter's pediatrician regarding her health and being forced to live in a construction zone, but One80 Place did nothing to make sure our safety and health were being protected. In all honesty, they did not care. My daughter, Lily, is asthmatic and her symptoms have been exacerbated by continuous viral infections at one80 place and the air quality was compromised even more due to the construction. I provided one80 place a letter from my daughter's pediatrician and they still did not care. This situation was handled inappropriately and without concern for my daughter's well being as well as my physical and mental health. Since we left the shelter, I have struggled to find a place to stay until I find a home for us. I do have my HUD-VASH voucher. My friends have paid for hotels, but they are no longer able to do so. As of today, November 18, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. my daughter and I have no where to go or sleep. I have reached out to HUD-VASH, SSVF, Military Community Connections, Palmetto Warriors, and CRRC and I have been advised that they cannot help with a temporary place to live until I find a home that will take my voucher. I have reached out to friends and even strangers for a safe place for us to stay. Nothing! My daughter is on fall break all next week and it is Thanksgiving. I have exhausted all resources. I am scared and I don't know what to do. It blows my mind that the mission of various organizations is "no Veteran left behind". My daughter and I have been left behind. Please help me.
