COLUMBIA, S.C. - A Japanese textile company
plans to create 130 jobs and invest $30 million when it locates its
first American automotive subsidiary in Gaffney, state commerce
officials said Wednesday.
Suminoe Textile Co. Ltd., a maker of interior textile products,
will make seat covers, headliners and carpeting at its Gaffney
facility.
The agreement was announced in Osaka, Japan, where Gov. Mark
Sanford and Commerce Secretary Bob Faith are on a two-week trade
mission.
The company chose Gaffney over sites in Georgia and North
Carolina because of the area's manufacturing climate and
"considerable Japanese presence," according to a Commerce Department
statement.
Suminoe received a $500,000 grant from the Commerce Department to
upgrade infrastructure.
"It is a great honor on the part of Suminoe to have the privilege
to invest in South Carolina, a state that has enjoyed a long history
in the field of textiles in the U.S.," President Sadahiko Kondo said
in a prepared
statement.
