I do not agree with this whole idea and would like to offer this for consideration.. To start I would like the actual history of SC and why a different flag came into play in the first place. In 1860, I believe, LT GEN Wade Hampton, who is considered a "hero" in SC. Announced that SC was succeeding from the union. The "stars and bars" was placed on top of the statehouse as a message that SC was not happy with the new desegregation and equality being forced by law. I see this as a quiet protest. Then, after much discussion and protesting, the confederate memorial was built on the statehouse law, it is my belief that the placement of the memorial was an intention statement for people to be careful what they wish for as they will surely get it. So now, here we are in 2015 and because of some once again an action of hate has brought attention to the flag. And in a knee jerk reaction the world, being egged on by national media, wants bot only the flag but the entire memorial moved. If i may make a suggestion, instead of moving the memorial why can we not just change the flag. As I understand it no SC militia actually fought under the "battle flag" each having there own. Now I'll admit I have that info from husband and son who are multi-generation South Carolinians. So I suggest that the memorial stays right where it it and the flag be changed to the Succession Flag. It represents SC, the message being "outsiders do not make the decisions for the people of SC". We will listen to any suggestions but the people of SC are extremely self sufficient. My other suggestion is that a statewide vote be taken to see what the registered voters of the state get to make their wishes known and then those that have positions they were voted into can take action from there.
