S.C. Gift Card Holders Have New Protection
Sanford Signs Bill Into Law
COLUMBIA --
Gift cards may be easy to buy, but they often come with so much fine
print that they aren’t so easy to use.
Gov. Mark Sanford signed a bill
into law Thursday that creates new rules on the fees and conditions that
come with gift cards in South Carolina.
The law requires any fees and conditions to be clearly marked on
the envelope holding the card.
It also makes it illegal for cards to expire within a year of
purchase unless clearly stated.
The rules are meant to help protect consumer pocketbooks.
A Money magazine study showed 20 percent of consumers never spend
the entire amount on their gift cards.
