(Columbia-AP) May 18, 2004 -- A constitutional
amendment allowing voters to decide whether South
Carolina keeps minibottles is on its way to the House
floor. The House Judiciary Committee approved the
amendment Tuesday.
The amendment needs two-thirds approval from the
House to end up on November's ballot.
South Carolina Hospitality Association President Tom
Sponseller says he thinks the bill has a good chance to
pass before the Legislature adjourns June 3rd.
If it passes, voters won't be directly deciding the
fate of the 1.7 ounce bottles of liquor served in
bars and restaurants. Instead, they will decide if the
clause in the constitution forcing the state to use
minibottles should be removed. It will be up to the
Legislature to pass a law regulating how liquor would be
served.
South Carolina is the only state that requires the
bottles.
