A suspected enemy combatant could soon be a free man.
Officials have held Yasar Hamdi for more than two years at the
Naval Consolidated Brig. But officials say he can now be
allowed to return to Saudi Arabia. The agreement was
apparently struck with the justice department. Hamdi will not
face any criminal charges in the United States.
Meantime, Hamdi's lawyer says the agreement that his client
signed last week calls for Hamdi to renounce his American
citizenship. Hamdi agreed to restrictions barring travel to
certain countries. The US captured Hamdi on a battlefield in
Afghanistan where he was fighting alongside the Taliban in
late 2001.
At this moment there is no information on when he will be
released. The US Supreme Court says authorities can't hold
Hamdi indefinitely as an enemy combatant with no legal
rights
