Youth Fishing Day set for June 23 at renovated Lake Edwin Johnson in Spartanburg
The recently renovated Lake Edwin Johnson at Croft State Park in Spartanburg will play host to a Youth Fishing Day on Saturday, June 23.
A week later, on Saturday, June 30, Lake Edwin Johnson will be the site of a Family Fishing Clinic, an introductory class to fishing that teaches skills on how to tie fishing knots, how to rig a rod and reel, casting, and the best part is everyone gets to try their hand at fishing! Youth Fishing Day at Lake Edwin Johnson will be 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 23 for children ages 15 and under. Fishing will be from the bank, and children should have adult supervision. Youth attending the event should bring their own fishing tackle and bait.
Lake Edwin Johnson opens again to the public Sunday, July 1.
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently completed renovations to Lake Edwin Johnson, which was the first DNR public fishing lake in the State Lakes Program. DNR has an agreement with the State Park Service to manage Lake Johnson at Croft State Park as an intensively managed lake for public fishing. DNR currently manages 19 state lakes to provide quality fishing in areas of South Carolina where fishing opportunities are limited.
The Lake Johnson renovation was done by DNR to remove undesirable invasive species, which had likely resulted from unauthorized introduction by anglers. The introduction had caused the fishery to decline to a point where it was not providing good fishing opportunities. DNR biologists urge the angling public not to introduce fish into DNR state lakes. It is illegal and can result in severe damage to quality fishing opportunities, as was the case at Lake Johnson.
DNR fisheries staff drained the lake, removed the invasive species, and then restocked with desirable species. The new populations of bluegill (bream), redear sunfish (shellcracker), and largemouth bass in Lake Johnson are doing exceptionally well, and will provide a high-quality fishing opportunity for area youth on June 23 for the Youth Fishing Day, and June 30 for the Family Fishing Clinic.
