Second recount
ahead for Senate District 30 race

FLORENCE, S.C. - A second recount of votes has
been ordered for the state Senate District 30 primary race to make
sure that it's Florence businessman Tim Norwood in the runoff
against incumbent Sen. Maggie Glover, D-Florence.
Norwood finished six votes ahead of the candidate in third,
Marion County Deputy Administrator Kent Williams.
Glover led the Democratic primary, but did not win 50 percent of
the vote in the four counties she represents - Florence, Marion,
Dillon and Marlboro - and so must take part in a runoff June 22.
One mandatory recount has already been held with Glover getting
6,207 votes, Norwood 5,748 and Williams 5,742. Those totals were
certified by county election commissions.
South Carolina Election Commission spokesman Gary Baum said the
votes will be sent back to county commissioners for one more
recount, which is scheduled for Monday.
Races in which there is a margin of victory less than 1 percent
require a recount, said Florence County Election Commission director
Russell Barrett.
The candidates had to await certification because Tuesday's count
showed only seven votes separating Norwood and Williams. With
several ballot challenges, no one was sure who had second place.
Recounts also have been ordered for Monday for the Senate
District 12 race between Republicans Lee Bright and Spartanburg Sen.
John Hawkins, and for Republicans Joan Brady, Susan Brill, L.W.
Flynn and Don Purcell seeking the House District 78 seat.
