New artificial reef dedication ceremony Oct. 28 in Murrells Inlet
In October of this year, Surfside Beach resident Bob Hanson made a generous donation to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for the improvement of South Carolina’s artificial reefs. DNR will use this donation to add new reef material near Murrells Inlet that will be known as the "Bob Hanson Reef." The material will make the area more attractive to fish and provide new opportunities for anglers.
A dedication ceremony for the new reef will be held on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012 at 12 noon at Spuds Waterfront Dining in Murrells Inlet. The Grand Strand Saltwater Anglers Association (GSSAA) will host the ceremony with a catered lunch following the dedication. The deployment originally planned for the same day as the ceremony will be rescheduled due to potential hurricane weather.
Mr. Hanson, 81, has been an avid saltwater fisherman since childhood. He has fished all over the world with his notable catches including an 80 pound Halibut in Alaska and a 10 foot Sailfish in Mexico. He's been a member of the GSSAA since 1998. During numerous club meetings, he has given presentations on how to live off the harvest of shell fish, crabs and fish from Murrells Inlet and always stresses the importance of conserving the natural resources of both the Inlet and the coastal waters.
The development and proper management of a system of marine artificial reefs can be viewed as a long-term investment for the state of South Carolina. Since man-made reefs constructed today can still be in place and fully functional easily for the next several decades, effective planning and management are critical in ensuring future success. The primary role for artificial reefs now and in the future should be to serve as tools in the proper management of marine fisheries.
