Sheriff's deputies say one person died after an apparent F-2 tornado, according to early National Weather Service estimates, touched down near Ridgeway off Interstate 77 about 9:35 or 9:40pm in the neighborhood known as "the Durham Place."

An F-2 would have winds of 130-140 miles per hour and a path 1-2 miles long. The storm would be about 220-yards wide.

About 25 or 30 family members live in the area. They are now mourning the loss of one of their own. Coroner Joe Silvia says Julius Durham was thrown from his mobile home and died early Tuesday morning at Providence Hospital Northeast. Silvia says Durham was in his late 70s. His home was destroyed and wrapped around a tree, according to Chief Deputy Keith Lewis.

Chief Lewis says 13 people were taken to the hospital. The others had only minor injuries. He says most have been treated and released.

Lewis says many of the residents were inside when the tornado touched down, "I talked with several people who lived here about hearing a loud noise." Trees were snapped cars turned upside down.

Nearly everything inside was thrown out of the homes, including a 72-year-old woman who lived by herself. Lewis says she walked away from the wreckage, "Her mobile home was completely taken off the foundation. It was tossed a good 25-feet, and she was able to come out of the wreckage and walk to a safe place to find shelter."

Lewis says five homes were destroyed and three others were damaged, "It's pretty much total damage. Most of the houses you can see are destroyed." Many homes were moved completely off their foundations. He says about two dozen people were taken to shelters.

Silvia says a Blair man died in a wreck shortly before 11:00pm. Fifty-six-year-old James Feaster Junior died when his car ran off state Highway 34 and struck a utility pole about three miles west of Winnsboro.
