Marching Bands 174.107.194.192 Dear Governor Haley, I would like to share with you a letter of support I sent to the Charleston Post and Courier in regarding Sen. Sheheen's bill. I couldn't agree more and hope that when it passes the legislature, you will find it worthy to sign into law. "As both a father of a high school marching band member and a previous high school and collegiate marching band member myself (say it softly around here, The World Renown Florida State University Marching Chiefs), I would like to thank Senator Sheheen for introducing his bill that marching band count as a P.E. requirement. Not only are the rehearsals in the hot afternoons arduous and taxing, high school marching band is very much more than good exercise. In addition to the obvious musicianship required, it also takes skill and teamwork to learn, memorize, and perform complicated shows for both halftime entertainment and local/state competitions. And then there is the leadership development of the students. The most talented and knowledgeable band director would never be able to put a quality show on the field without students who take on leadership roles to teach the ropes to new members and to assist in the trenches to get the show ready for presentation. They are also expected to be good role models and in certain circumstances, be responsible for peer behavior and conduct. Finally, there are the band parents who are probably the most supportive of any single activity in the schools. They are there to chaperone trips, coordinate and maintain uniforms, transport equipment, build props, raise funds, provide food and water, as well as anything else the programs need. Recognizing the extraordinary effort put forth by our students as a P.E. requirement is the very least that our state legislature and Governor Haley should approve.
