Reading Honor Roll
During the 2000 State of the State Address, I challenged every student to read at least 20 books every year. Students who meet this challenge will be named to the Governor’s Reading Honor Roll. Students already earn a presidential certificate for physical fitness. Now they can win recognition for reading fitness as well.

When you join the Governor’s Reading Honor Roll, you commit to read 20 books this year and become a part of a great journey of discovery. Reading is a fun and exciting way to see places you’ve never been or learn about things you’ve never seen.

Building strong reading skills also will help you perform better in every subject in school. Becoming a top-notch reader is like any area where you want to excel – you’ve got to practice. Putting in the effort required to join the Reading Honor Roll will make you a special part of a statewide team of readers.

To earn your Governor’s Reading Honor Roll certificate, read 20 books and record the titles on the forms provided by your teacher. Have a parent, teacher or other adult initial each entry. When your form is complete, return it to your school – and be sure to meet any deadline set by your teacher or principal.

The Reading Honor is open to all students in South Carolina – from kindergarten to 12th grade. I hope you will take and complete the challenge. I want to you to share the value and power of good books – something that lasts a lifetime!

Sincerely,

Jim Hodges
