Two Wofford College alumni have given one of the largest donations to date for the school's capital campaign, which began last fall.
Brothers Stewart and Steven Mungo of Irmo have established a permanent endowed professorship, as well as money to support scholarships, in the amount of $1.9 million.
Last October, Wofford announced the most ambitious fundraising campaign in its 151-year existence.
Administrators hope to raise $105 million in the next three years for the college's endowment.
More than half of the money -- $55 million -- will be used to support student scholarships, endowed professorships and academic programs.
Stewart Mungo graduated from Wofford in 1974, and Steven graduated in 1981.
Stewart, 53, studied government during his undergraduate days at Wofford. He has served as a member of the college's board of trustees for the past five years.
Stewart also has a son and a daughter who both graduated from the college.
The brothers operate a development and home-building business in Irmo.
"Both of us had wonderful experiences at Wofford, and it will be an integral part of our lives forever because it provided a moral compass about how to live life," Stewart said.
The friendships that he made at the college have been invaluable throughout his life, he said.
Stewart expects Wofford's enrollment to continue to grow, and that the college and the city will play an important role in each other's development.
"We are glad to give back to a community and school that's been so kind to us," Stewart said.
Wofford has received gift commitments up to $69.5 million for its capital campaign. Wofford has received $4.5 million from the Bonner Foundation, the largest gift to date to this campaign, followed by $2.5 million from Ann Cobb Johnson.
The largest gift ever to Wofford was a bequest of $14 million from Mrs. Hosmozel Mickel Daniel in the early 1990s.
