(Columbia) June 22, 2006 - First Lady Jenny
Sanford has sent out an e-mail making her
opinion on the Lieutenant Governor's race known.
Bauer's campaign advisor issued a response to
Mrs. Sanford's e-mail.
Jenny Sanford's e-mail is as follows:
Dear Friend:
With Mark over in Iraq visiting our brave men
and women in uniform, I have my hands full at
home and on the campaign trail. But I did want
to take a minute to share a thought with you
about the upcoming runoff election for
Lieutenant Governor on Tuesday.
As you know, Governor Carroll Campbell's son
Mike Campbell is one of the candidates in the
runoff for Lieutenant Governor. The Campbell
family has been incredibly gracious and helpful
to Mark and me, both in the 2002 campaign, and
as Governor and First Lady, and we consider them
personal friends.
I know Mike Campbell well, and I know him to
be a person of great character and true
conservative beliefs. He is solidly committed to
supporting Mark's agenda of smaller government,
lower taxes, and major restructuring of state
government, including the functions of the
Lieutenant Governor's office.
I don't make formal political endorsements,
but I want you to know that as a South Carolina
citizen, I'll be voting for Mike Campbell in the
runoff on Tuesday. I believe he's the right
person for the job, and I know that he will be a
strong ally for Mark in state government.
Sincerely,
Jenny Sanford
In response, campaign advisor Rod Shealy
issued the following statement on behalf of the
Andre Bauer Campaign:
"Andre Bauer certainly respects Mrs.
Sanford's close personal relationship with the
Campbell family. At the same time, the Lt.
Governor looks forward to once again campaigning
alongside Governor Sanford as a unified
Republican Party for the November General
Election.
"The Bauer campaign also announced several
key endorsements of Bauer's re-election:
- Former State Representative Brad Jordan,
brother of Dr. Henry Jordan, announced that he
and 10 other family members were publicly
endorsing and will be voting for Bauer. The ten
are: Robert Jackson, MD; Ed Jordan, MD; Debbie
Jordan; Kathy Jordan; Matt Jordan; DeAnne
Jordan; Benji Jordan; Jennifer Jordan; Melanie
Jordan; and Rhodes Jordan.
- Over three dozen state and local elected
Republican leaders from key Republican counties
endorsed Bauer in letters mailed to their
individual counties. "Andre Bauer is the best
choice for conservatives,' they wrote, noting
that Bauer's rulings had 'blocked over $1.5
billion in proposed new taxes.'
"Asking voters to support Bauer were: Sheriff
James Metts; Representatives Ted Pitts and
Marion Frye; Senator Jake Knotts; and Councilmen
Todd Cullum and Johnny Jeffcoat from Lexington
County; Sheriff Wayne DeWitt; Senators Larry
Grooms and Bill Mescher; Representatives Tom
Dantzler and Shirley Hinson of Berkeley County;
Senators Harvey Peeler and John Hawkins;
Representatives Joe Mahaffey, Scott Talley, and
Lanny Littlejohn; and Councilman Rock Adams from
Spartanburg County; former Congressman Tommy
Hartnett; Senators Randy Scott and Ray Cleary;
and Representatives Converse Chellis and Annette
Young from Charleston and Dorchester counties;
Senators Mike Fair and J. Verne Smith; and
Representatives Dwight Loftis, Bob Leach, Garry
Smith and Lewis Vaughn from Greenville County;
Representatives Thad Viers, Tracy Edge, Nelson
Hardwick, Liston Barfield, and Billy Witherspoon
from Horry County; and Sheriff David Crenshaw;
Representative Becky Rogers Martin; Senator
Billy O'dell and former Senator Bob Waldrep.
"Endorsements of Bauer were mailed Thursday
to members of several key conservative groups,
including the South Carolina Citizens for Life
and the National Rifle Association, as well as
several local taxpayer groups, all of which have
officially endorsed Bauer's re-election."
Campbell said he's flattered to have the
first lady's support in any form.
