(Columbia-AP) May 7, 2004 -- It appears the
Senate will be debating the state's budget plan
into the night.
Senate Republicans can't agree on a way to
break an impasse on a gaping $131 million hole
in the state's $5.3 billion budget.
Senators also have different plans on how to pay
off the state's $155 million deficit created two
years ago.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Hugh
Leatherman says it's important to pay off the
deficit. But the Republican say he wants to pay
for state programs and services first.
Democrats have proposed tax increases, but
all plans have been scuttled.
