Published Tue, Jun 17, 2003
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - U.S. Department of Justice is giving the state Public Safety Department a $2 million grant to help stop violence against women.

Each state gets money from the federal STOP Violence Against Women Program. The program works to strengthen victim services, law enforcement and prosecution strategies.

About $1 million, or half, of the state's grant will go to prosecution and law enforcement. Nonprofit, non-governmental victim services will get 30 percent of the grant. Public Safety will decide how to spend the remaining 15 percent.
