The bill was intended to give parents who qualify a tax
credit to use toward private or public school is on hold. On
Wednesday afternoon, the state’s full committee adjourned
debate on Governor Mark Sanford’s Put Parents in Charge
Proposal.
On Tuesday, dozens of parents and educators voiced their
opinions about the plan at the first public meeting in
Columbia. South Carolina’s Superintendent of Education Inez
Tenenbaum does not support the proposed plan.
Some say the credit will hurt public schools while other
vigorously support the plan. The state’s house subcommittee
passed the governor's school tax credits plan, 2-1.
Wednesday afternoon the full committee moved to adjourn the
debate for the current legislative session. If made into law
the tax credit will only apply to families who make less than
75- thousand a year.
