ON THE
RECORD
Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer’s driving has been a center of attention
before. His state driving record carries no points, but the recent
incidents join several others over the years.
Since 1997, he has had two accidents, four tickets and one
suspended license for failure to pay a ticket.
Here are some details:
• Was pulled over on Assembly
Street in Columbia in May 2003 after an officer said he ran several
red lights and was driving up to 60 mph downtown in a 35 mph zone.
After stopping, Bauer walked toward the police car in what the
officer described as an “aggressive manner.” The officer drew his
gun and pointed it at Bauer. Bauer eventually pleaded guilty to
driving too fast for conditions and disobeying a traffic device. He
later paid $311.25 for the offenses.
• Was a driver in accidents in
June 1997 and July 1999. It is unclear whether Bauer was at fault.
Bauer has previously said he doesn’t remember the 1997 wreck. In
1999, he has said, he was driving on I-26 toward Spartanburg in the
rain when he hydroplaned and was hit by an 18-wheeler. He said he
believes he was found at fault.
• License suspended for 12 days in
February and March 1999 for failing to pay a ticket. Bauer has said
he was unaware it had been suspended.
