(Columbia)—Today,
Lieutenant Governor Bob Peeler announced that ‘Choose Life’ license tag
legislation (H.3714) gained significant support in the South Carolina General
Assembly when it was introduced late last week by Representative Gloria Haskins
and seventy-eight additional sponsors. Last
Wednesday, March 13th, a similar bill was introduced in the South Carolina State
Senate (S.462) with nineteen sponsors.
Lt. Governor Bob Peeler said, “This bill is
right on track and we appear to have a great deal of momentum building, even if
Patricia Ireland and the group from the National Organization of Women are
against us.”
Last Thursday, Patricia Ireland, NOW National
President was in South Carolina and referred to the ‘Choose Life’
legislation in Friday’s Charleston Post
and Courier as, “It’s really entangling the state in religious
questions.”
Peeler
went on to illustrate that the bill already enjoys wide bi-partisan support,
“I am so pleased we now have twenty Democrats signed on to the bill in the
House and Senate. With this early key support, we look forward to meaningful
legislative debate in the next few weeks.”
Lead
House Sponsor, Rep. Gloria Haskins added, “This is just the first step, and I
know we have a long way to go…but we intend to finish what we started and have
these tags available to all South Carolinians as soon as possible.”
