Hopkins SC 29061 lizcuttinovm@gmail.com 803-776-2138 Dear Governor Haley, I am writing you as a single working foster mother of a Level 2 therapeutic foster child. Your role as a formidable advocate for the advancement of foster care in our state has encouraged me to reach out to you for help in last-ditch effort to maintain the ability to extend my home to my foster child. Despite being a tax-paying property owner and business owner in Lexington-Richland 5, I have not been able to secure my foster son, Greggory Johnson, enrollment in a school within reasonable distance of my Veterinary Hospital. I work full-time (6 days a week) at my clinic, Seven Oaks Animal Hospital, and my foster son and I live in Hopkins. District officials have forced Greggory to attend a school 40 minutes away from my place of business due to routine zoning rules. Greggory is a therapeutic child on medication, and to require an hour and twenty minute round trip plus temporary closure of business to access him during any school need is excessive and incompatible with long term placement. A conference call today with the Guardian ad Litem, DSS supervisor and Bair Foundation case worker resulted in all parties supporting doing whatever needs to be done to transfer Greggory to Crossroads Intermediate School. The director of guidance at this school, Laura Jones, supports enrolling Greggory. I have also witnessed the precedent of other foster children being placed in a school in this district due to similar hardships of the foster parent. The sticking point is at the level of Student Services in District 5, which is denying enrollment to Greggory based on district zoning policy. Given that I both pay taxes and work in the Lex/Richland 5 district as a property owner, and that the distance to our residential zoning is incompatible with sustaining this placement long term, I am asking for help to make an exception to the residency policy that is prohibiting Greggory from enrolling in Crossroads Intermediate School. Greggory's current plan is in transition to a goal of TPR rather than reunification, and his long term future depends on the ability to get him in a school accessible to me during the work day. Thank you for your continued strong support of improving the foster care system and your dedication to the futures of the children in its care. With best regards, Liz Cuttino, DVM, Foster mother to Greggory Johnson.
