Bill Would Give S.C. Another
Federal Judge |
South Carolina could get another federal
judge under a bill approved by the U.S. Senate Judiciary
Committee.
South Carolina ranks 18th among the 94 district
court systems in the nation in terms of caseload.
The state
has the highest caseload in the Fourth Circuit, which includes South
Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and West
Virginia.
Each South Carolina federal district judge had an
average of 499 cases pending last year. The national average was 471
pending cases.
Chief U.S. District Judge Joe Anderson says he
would like to have another pair of hands.
South Carolina has
eleven federal judges. South Carolina Circuit Judge Henry Floyd has
been nominated for the seat vacated by U.S. District Judge Dennis
Shedd. He's been promoted to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in
Richmond, Virginia. |
