We homeschool, and this state is our classroom. We "on the go" all the time. But I'm worried about our safety in light of what we have seen in France and around the world. I'm writing to implore you, from one mom to another, not to allow Syrian refugees to settle in this state. We live in a time where people really truly want to kill us for who we are, and for our religious beliefs. Yet we can not even protect ourselves in our own places of worship, because the state will not allow even CWP holders to carry their weapons there. How does this make sense? These people have the ways and means for small scale attacks, wherever there is an opportunity. I'm begging you not to give it them. Do not let them in. We are in denial. We want to be gracious and welcoming, but this is not the time. We can not let the kindness of our hearts, and desire for a different world full or goodness and peace, cloud our view of the reality at hand. We want to be able to say to these refugees, "I'm so sorry for your suffering, here let us help you." But sometimes we can not help. (We can't afford it!) This is one of those times. The risks are too great. It only takes one or two to make a whole lot of victims right here in South Carolina. Your citizens did not sign up for this. We are not volunteering to live among terrorists and risk our lives to go out for dinner, attend a play, or worship. Please reconsider. Additionally, please work with the state's representatives to pass legislation that will eliminate gun free zones in this state, such that our people can defend themselves wherever they may be. This is of the utmost importance and should NOT wait until January. Thank you for your time.
