Vice President Speaks at
Thurmond Funeral |
(Columbia-AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney
today praised South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond for his
dedication to America.
Cheney was the first speaker at
Thurmond's funeral Tuesday afternoon in Columbia. Cheney said
there's never been a political carrier like Thurmond's. Cheney said
he expects there will never be one like it in the
future.
Cheney noted Theodore Roosevelt was president when
Thurmond was born. President Bush hosted Thurmond's 100th birthday
party in Washington last December.
Cheney said Thurmond was a
man of deep convictions. Cheney said national security was
Thurmond's most important issue.
Thurmond chaired the Senate
Armed Services Committee for years.
Cheney said during his
time as defense secretary, he knew he could count on Thurmond to
stand up for a well-trained and well-equipped military. |
