. Sanford is in the final weeks of putting
together his first executive budget.
(Cayce-AP) Dec. 2, 2003 - Governor Mark Sanford says
South Carolina should sell more than 6100 state
vehicles, more than a third of its fleet, and try to get
out of the business of buying and maintaining vehicles .
Sanford says South Carolina can make $33-$34 million
by selling the cars and save $8 million a year in
other costs by having a smaller fleet.
The state currently owns about 15,000 vehicles.
Sanford says the majority of this money could be used
to offset rising costs of state employee health
insurance. About half of the 30 people who work with the
state's fleet operations would lose their jobs under the
governor's plan.
House Ways and Means Chairman Bobby Harrell agrees
with Sanford's plan
The governor talked about his idea while visiting the
state vehicle maintenance facility in Cayce Tuesday
morning. Sanford says selling the cars is just part of
his budget proposal he will introduce to lawmakers later
this month.
