How to
help
U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson suggests
these organizations as worthy places to send
checks for tsunami disaster relief:
* The
Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, Embassy
India, 2107 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington,
D.C., 20008.
* The Tsunami Disaster
Relief Fund, American Chamber of Commerce in
India, Room 1262, Maurya Sheraton Hotel, S.P.
Marg, New Delhi, India 110
021.
Pro-port
U.S. Rep. Joe
Wilson, R-S.C., didn't hesitate when asked
Thursday if he supports Jasper County's proposed
container cargo port: "I'm 100 percent for it.
It will be beneficial to the entire Lowcountry,
and I think we need to include the Lowcountry of
Georgia in
it."

makes pitch for tsunami relief donations
BEAUFORT: Congressman says America should
reach out to Asian disaster victims.
By Mark Kreuzwieser Carolina Morning News
Joe
Wilson, South Carolina's 2nd Congressional
District representative, made a passionate plea
for donations to help the South Asian victims of
last Sunday's earthquake and tsunami that have
killed more than 120,000 people.
Wilson,
whose district includes Beaufort and Jasper
counties, told local leaders in Beaufort on
Thursday that he's a co-chair of the Congressional
Caucus on India and
Indian-Americans.
"Indian-Americans give so
much to our country," he said. "We've got to reach
out to them and their friends and families and
help the victims of this terrible
tragedy."
Besides going on the Internet and
giving cash donations, Wilson said, people can
mail checks to the Prime Minister's National
Relief Fund, Embassy India, 2107 Massachusetts
Ave., NW, Washington, D.C., 20008, and to the
Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund, American Chamber of
Commerce in India, Room 1262, Maurya Sheraton
Hotel, S.P. Marg, New Delhi, India 110
021.
The United and States and India have
much in common, he said, the most important of
which is political freedom.
"India is the
world's largest democracy, and the U.S. is the
world's oldest democracy," Wilson
said.
Wilson, who defended his seat against
Democratic Party challenger Michael Ellisor in the
November election, met with community and elected
leaders in Beaufort just days before the 109th
Congress begins its first session on
Tuesday.
He also spoke about proposed
military base closures, reorganizing the tax
system, Social Security reform and national
defense, and his continued support of the war in
Iraq.
He said he supports President Bush's
initiative to revamp the federal tax code,
including "simplifying it so average Americans can
understand it," and reforming Social
Security.
"We need to give our younger
people the opportunity to invest and personally
save their Social Security so there will be
something there when they retire," Wilson
said.
"Americans deserve a tax system that
is simple, fair and works in their favor," he
said. "I will also remain dedicated to making
President Bush's tax cuts permanent."
He
said his fellow Republicans are "taking important
steps to ensure that Social Security remains
strong and financially secure for our children and
grandchildren. By allowing workers to control
their own retirement, our actions will help more
Americans receive the benefits they
deserve."
