Subject: Taxing and regulating marijuana keeps it out of the hands of children

Feb 15, 2016

Governor Nikki Haley
Office of the Governor
1205 Pendleton Street
Columbia, SC 29201

Dear Governor Haley,

Please work to enact legislation to tax and regulate marijuana in a
manner similar to alcohol and tobacco in our state. This will free up
significant law enforcement resources and put an end to the underground
marijuana market.

Sellers of marijuana are currently completely unregulated. Unlike
licensed businesses that sell alcohol or tobacco, marijuana sellers
operate virtually anywhere and have no incentive not to sell to
children.

A law regulating marijuana like alcohol or tobacco would put an end to
this. Sellers would be regulated, destroying the market for illegal
marijuana and stopping sales to minors. This would also free up our
court dockets and allow police officers to spend more time
investigating and arresting violent offenders. Colorado and Washington
State voters have chosen a new approach to marijuana, to bring it off
the criminal market.

An October 2013 Gallup poll found that 58% of Americans think marijuana
should be legal. Please follow the will of the American people and
introduce or support legislation to help replace wasteful, ineffective
laws with policies that put drug dealers out of business.

Sincerely,

Ms. Latoya Ayers
