The goal of this gathering of leaders from the top travel agencies in the country is to exchange best business practices and discuss the serious issues facing our industry. It is an elite group that accounts for 80 percent of all travel sold through the travel agency channel in the United States - most companies represented boast annual travel sales of more than $50 million. Nearly 100 ASTA "Premium Members," several South Carolinians among them, are expected to attend this year's invitation-only event. We feel strongly that this group would benefit greatly from hearing your views on the role travel and tourism plays in South Carolina's economic development, as well as the selling points of the state as a destination for both leisure and business travel. This audience should be viewed as partners to the state as you work toward build on the momentum South Carolina's travel and tourism industry has shown of late - namely, $12.2 billion spent by domestic travelers on transportation, lodging, food, entertainment and recreation in the state, up 5.3 percent from 2013. ASTA is the trade association for travel agents of all shapes and sizes, from the smallest home-based agent to the large travel management companies like American Express and Carlson Wagonlit to the household-name online companies such as Priceline. Our current membership consists of about 2,600 domestic travel agency and allied travel companies (including no fewer than 18 South Carolina-based companies) with nearly 30,000 employees.
