COLUMBIA -- Gov. Mark Sanford's new
executive budget will include renewed calls for government
restructuring to make agencies more accountable.
Sanford said he wants to consolidate seven health and
human agencies into three.
He said the need for change is underscored by recent
reports that some health agencies should have performed
better.
He noted the Department of Health and Environmental
Control's handling of lead-laden water in a Columbia-area
neighborhood and the Department of Disability and Special
Needs not responding enough to abuse complaints.
The governor said the changes will save the state $13
million.
Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer said the full budget will
be released in early January.
