SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - Hubert D. Osteen Jr. is stepping down as president of Osteen Publishing Co., and has named his two oldest sons, Graham and Kyle Osteen, co-presidents effective Sept. 1.

Hubert Osteen also will be stepping down as publisher of The Item, but still will serve as the newspaper's editor.

Jack Osteen, his youngest son, will take over responsibilities as publisher of The Item.

The changes coincide with 150 years of the Osteens' involvement in newspaper journalism. The company publishes The Item, a 23,000-circulation daily newspaper founded in 1894; The Messenger, a 6,500-circulation twice-weekly newspaper in Hartsville that was founded in 1893; and owns and operates SCnetSolutions, the Internet, networking and Web development division of the company.

Hubert Osteen, 68, has served as chairman and president of the company since 1996, and took on the role of publisher of The Item in 1985. He will also continue in his role as chairman of Osteen Publishing Co.

Graham Osteen, 44, will continue to serve as editor and publisher of The Messenger and will oversee the entire news operation for Osteen Publishing Co., both in print and online.

Kyle Osteen, 41, will oversee production and operation issues for the company and continue to serve as president of SCnetSolutions, the division he started in 1999. As co-presidents, the two will share responsibilities for managing all aspects of the company.

As publisher of The Item, Jack Osteen, 35, will oversee the day-to-day operations, including advertising, marketing, circulation and news. He will remain a vice president of the company.
