Playing hardball in the Palmetto State

Talk doesn’t believe that anybody should have made fun of Gov. Mark Sanford last week just because he couldn’t correctly identify South Carolina’s top agricultural product during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Hardball.”

Gov. Sanford probably just got distracted by blowhard host Chris Matthews’ screaming at the top of his lungs as he always does.

Plus it’s not as if we knew the answer either. Our guess probably would have been something like Slim Jims.

Sanford, however, first gave timber as an answer, then tried tomatoes. Both were, as Alex Trebek likes to say, incorrect.

(We’d never suggest — as we heard some people whisper — that Sanford might have gotten the answer right if he had attended public schools.)

The right answer? Broilers, as in chickens, followed by greenhouses and nurseries, turkeys and tobacco. (We’re pretty sure Slim Jims must rank fifth.)

But the entire episode got us thinking that many folks probably don’t know as much about their native state as they should. So we have devised a little home-grown quiz to test your knowledge of all things Palmetto. Give it a try.

Just remember, though, that you’ll have no “Millionaire” lifelines such as Ask the Audience, 50:50, or Phone-a-Friend.
