Degennaro Retirement 138.162.8.57 First Class Sonar Technician Surface (Surface warfare) Michael A. DeGennaro was born on December 12, 1977 in Augusta, GA. After graduating from North Augusta High School, in 1996 he joined the Navy. After Basic Training in Great Lakes, IL, he attended Sonar Technician (Surface) class "A" school at FLEASWTRACENPAC in San Diego, CA. Petty Officer DeGennaro's 1st assignment was in 1997 to the USS Caron (DD 970). He served as a SONAR Operator and Work Center Supervisor. While onboard he was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea. In December 1999, Petty Officer DeGennaro transferred to FLEASWTRACENPAC and completed Digital Electronics Training and MK 116 Maintenance School graduating with honors. In July 2000, STG1 transferred to USS Hue City (CG 66) in Mayport, FL. He served as Work Center Supervisor and lead MK 116 Technician. In 2001, he earned his Enlisted Surface Warefare Specialist. While onboard he made deployments to the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf. In October of 2002 he transferred to Navy Recruiting District Montgomery AL. He attended Recruiting Orientation in Pensacola, FL before being stationed at NRS Pearl, MS. In October 2005, he transferred to USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) in Mayport, FL. In route he completed MK 116 Operator and Advanced Acoustic Analysis, graduating with Honors at FLEASWTRACENPAC. He then reported to USS Roosevelt as the CA Div LPO and ships ASW Specialist. While onboard he qualified CSTT, CSOOW, and Departmental Career Counselor. During his time onboard he also completed Hazardous Material Control Management School and Safety Programs Afloat Course becoming LPO of Roosevelt's Supply Department serving dual roles. It was during this time that he was he was handpicked by CNSL and CPR-4 to assist and train USS Vella Gulf (CG 72) in obtaining their ASW Certification. While onboard Roosevelt, STG1 completed two IWO ARG DEPLOYMENT and a Standing NATO Maritime Deployment. His efforts resulted in USS Roosevelt being awarded the 2007 CNO Safety Award, 2007 Retention Excellence Award, and all 6 2007 Command Excellence Awards. In April 2010, he Transferred to NRD Raleigh, NC and was put in charge of NRS Aiken, SC. As LPO his station was Awarded FY11 and 12 Station of the Year. In April 2013, he reported to USS Samuel B Roberts (FFG 58) as the CA Div LPO. While onboard he qualified ATTWO, ASWE, Section Leader, Duty Combat, ATTT, and CAT TEAM. Along with his LPO Duties, he was also Departmental LPO, and Career counselor. During his time onboard he also completed Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor School. While onboard STG1 completed 2 AFRICOM Deployments. After the Samuel B was decommissioned in 2015 STG1 was assigned to Southeast Regional Maintenance Center where he would complete his 20 year career on June 30, 2016. Petty Officer DeGennaro's awards include (7) Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, (5)Good Conduct medals, Armed Forces expeditionary Medal, National defense Medal, GWOT Expeditionary Medal, GWOT Service Medal,(2) NATO Article 5, and (5) Battle Efficiency Awards. He and his wife Haley reside in Jacksonville, Fl.
