Governor Mark Sanford ( website/news ) today awarded the state's highest scientific honor to two scientists.
Richard D. Adams received an award for research. Adams is the director of the NanoCenter at the University of South Carolina and a leading authority on metal atom clusters.
He earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Pennsylvania State University and his doctorate in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He came to the University of South Carolina from Yale University in 1984.
College of Charleston professor Charles F. Beam was given an award for scientific awareness.
Beam has mentored more than 110 undergraduate and high school students during his 20-year career. He has also established a research program for students at the college.
Adams and Beam were presented 1,000 dollar checks by the governor.
