As a child of Indian immigrants myself, I was overjoyed to hear that you were nominated. Seeing someone with a similar background to mine in a position to influence so much positive change around the world is very inspiring. My name is Anusha Tandon and I'm a high school student in Acton, Massachusetts. I'm writing to you on behalf of the United Nations Foundation campaign Girl Up, which advocates for adolescent girls in developing countries. I've been a part of Girl Up for almost 5 years now. Some of our efforts include the SchoolCycle fundraising programs in Malawi and Guatemala, which brought girls who live extremely far from their nearest school bicycles to eliminate the obstacle of transportation. We have also passed legislation in congress to bring to light the lack of birth registration for many kids in many countries. Right now, the campaign is focusing on refugee education. Right now, Girl Up is focusing on a piece of legislation called the Protecting Girls' Rights To Education is Vulnerable Settings Act (HR 5735). The legislation makes refugee education a top priority in foreign aid. Around 50% of refugees are children and they are kept away from their homes for nearly 17 years, which means their entire childhood is lost. Educating refugees is extremely important because with an education, they have the tools build a better life. Starting in 2017, I wanted to start a blog series of interviews with prominent people who can share their experiences on the Girl Up website. I was wondering if I could start with you, as it would be a great opportunity for girls everywhere to see what a person in your position can do for the world. I would love to know your thoughts on the bill, the refugee crisis, and what each person can do to help our world. Hoping to hear from you soon. Sincerely, Anusha Tandon
