Founded in 1982, SVN is an established professional organization that validates vascular nursing as a unique specialty. We are requesting your acknowledgement of this nursing specialty and the patients and families they care for through your support of the following Request for Proclamation: Whereas, the second week of September is Vascular Nurses Week. Whereas, there are 3.1 million licensed registered nurses in the United States and vascular nurses comprise an important part of this healthcare group. Whereas, in addition to providing excellence in direct patient care, vascular nurses participate in vascular research and serve as a valuable resource for policy makers. Whereas, the Society of Vascular Nursing (SVN) is a professional community of vascular nurses, who advance the care for those persons living with vascular disease through excellence in clinical practice, education, and research. Whereas, the core values of SVN are to advocate for both vascular nurses and for those persons who live with complex vascular disease. Whereas, PAD (Peripheral Arterial Disease) is a vascular disease in which the arteries supplying a limb (typically one or both legs) are obstructed. Sixty percent of PAD patients have coexisting coronary artery disease (CAD) or cerebrovascular disease. Whereas, there are approximately 8 million people in the United States with PAD; 12-20% of American people older than 60 have PAD . Whereas, people with vascular disease require an interdisciplinary team approach and the vascular nurse is an integral part of this team. The specialized vascular nurse is able to identify the resources required by the vascular patient population and to assist in providing optimal care and compassion. In celebration of the contribution of vascular nurses, who advance the care of persons living with vascular disease through excellence in clinical practice, education and research, therefore be it Resolved, That I, Nikki Haley, Governor of South Carolina), ask that all residents of this state/community join me in honoring the second week of September as Vascular Nurses Week, and be it further Resolved, That the residents of South Carolina celebrate the second week of September as Vascular Nurses Week.
