NORTH AUGUSTA, SC - Governor Mark Sanford could be characterized as one of the most powerful men in South Carolina and today he came out to talk to his constituents like Roland Smith, "I think its important for the Governor or just like the legislator to get out and hear what's on the minds of South Carolina specifically here in this area today."
For Governor Sanford an open door policy is not enough, he wants to hear what people have on their minds, "when you walk into the governors office and have to go thru security then that person is on the Governor's turf...when I walk into a parking lot at the Walmart in someone's neighborhood, I'm on their turf."
And since the Governor came to their backyard, many people like Alfonzo Jackson came out to voice their cause, "I'm here to encourage not only the Governor, but our young people to get involved in aviation."
And some like Peggy Johnson just wanted Sanford to know that they're in his corner,"to tell him how much I appreciate the job I’ve seen him do since we've been here."
Peggy’s new to South Carolina and says this makes her feel connected, "I just moved here recently from Florida and I believe in getting involved in your community and when I saw that he was going to be here I thought that's a good way to get involved."
Getting involved and learning from each other is what Sanford says he enjoys most, "I think I walk away with as much as they walk away with."
Citizens like Peggy seem to like too, "I like that the elected officials pay attention to you.”
And some might say this makes good political sense.
