F-16 crashes in Charleston, airmen escape

Associated Press

Two airmen safely ejected from the F-16 they were flying before the aircraft crashed near Charleston late Monday afternoon, a base spokesman said.

The airmen were flying on a training mission from Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, Lt. Suzanne Ovel said.

A board of officers will investigate the crash.

The plane crashed around 5 p.m. in a marshy area of the Ashley River. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries on the ground.

Television footage showed the two pilots walking down a boardwalk away from the wrecked plane.
