Gov. Mark Sanford requested that flags on all state buildings be lowered today to honor Greenville County Sheriff's Deputy Andrew Mazur.

Mazur was killed in the line of duty last Sunday evening. His funeral will take place today at Mauldin First Baptist Church.

"You can tell you've lost somebody special because everybody who came in contact with this young man speaks the world of him," Sanford said in a statement.

The Sheriff's Office says Mazur was shot by Christopher Mark Herring, 19, after he got Mazur's gun during a struggle. The county coroner said Herring used the same gun to kill himself Monday morning after he was surrounded by police.

Sanford said he hoped people would "stop and think when they look at the flags flying at half staff about the sacrifice these front-line first responders make every day for our state."
