Even though I'm not a Republican, I appreciate your stand for a level of civility that until now has not been present in the presidential debates. I wish, however, that when you met with the press later in the week, you had not said there we had never had racist laws. Jim Crow, segregation, miscegenation laws, and the notorious "three fifths of a person" all give the lie to that statement, and I can tell you from personal experience that being Jewish has exposed millions of my coreligionists to overt hostility and discrimination, some of it as old in state laws that forbade electing any but Christians to public office. I am certain that your remarks were given in the heat of the moment and not a reflection of your beliefs or knowledge of American history. I urge you to correct this misstatement.
